Answer:

Respiratory stimulants are also known as analeptics. Analeptics are drugs that stimulate respiration and have resuscitative in fainting or coma.

Doxapram is an analeptic or respiratory stimulant.

As a respiratory stimulant doxapram stimulates peripheral carotid chemoreceptors and leads to direct stimulation of the respiratory center.

  • The role of analeptics in therapeutics is very limited. The therapeutic uses are as follows:
  • It is used in hypnotic drug poisoning.
  • It is used in suffocation on drowning.
  • It is used in respiratory failure due to the removal of the hypoxic drive.
  • It is used in apnea in premature infants.
