• Fibrous capsule

• Anterior atlanto-occipital membrane
  • Extends from anterior margin of the foramen magnum to the upper border of the anterior arch of the atlas
• Posterior atlanto-occipital membrane
  • Extends from posterior margin of the foramen magnum to the upper border of the posterior arch of the atlas

Atlanto-occipital joint Arterial supply:

• Vertebral artery

Atlanto-occipital joint Nerve supply:

• First cervical nerve

Atlanto-occipital joint Movements:

• Flexion- around transverse axis
• Extension around transverse axis
• Lateral bending – around anteroposterior axis
