Answer. Treatment planning is an strategy for correcting the problems. If the strategy is good it helps in the designing of best appliance for the patient.

Treatment Planning for Primary Dentition

  • Alignment problem
    • If primary arch is well aligned and does not consists of any space it causes alignment space in permanent dentition.
    • Expansion is done where there is seaming of future crowding.

  • Incisor proclination or retroclination
    • It is caused due to deleterious sucking habits. It is self correcting if the habit is stopped at a stage.
    • If anterior crossbite occur, selective grinding can be done which correct the problem.
  • Posterior crossbite
    • Sucking habits causes constricted maxillary arch. Most constriction is seen in primary canine arch area. This causes occlusal interferences and functional shift
    • Narrow maxilla along with functional shift causes unilateral crossbite.
    • Correction of occlusal prematurities is done by selective grinding.
    • In bilateral constriction of maxilla, expansion of arch is done.
  • Anterior posterior discrepancies
    • In such discrepancies growth modification is done.
  • Vertical problems
    • If deep bite is present it is self correcting.
    • If open bite is present because of habits, it should be corrected by habit breaking appliance.
