Understanding Nerve Fibers: Types And Classification

Types of nerve fibers.
Answer:

1. Depending upon structure.

  1. Myelinated nerve fibers.
    • Nerve fibers covered by myelin sheath.
  2. Non myelinated nerve fibers.
    • Does not have myelin sheath.

2. Depending upon distribution.

  1. Somatic nerve fibers – supplies skeletal muscles.
  2. Visceral nerver fibers – supplies internal organs of body.

3. Depending upon origin.

  1. Cranial nerves – arises from the brain.
  2. Spinal nerves – arises from spinal cord.

4. Depending upon function.

  1. Motor nerve fibers – carries motor impulses.
  2. Sensory nerve fibers – carries sensory impulses.

5. Depending, upon secretion of neurotransmitter.

  1. Adrenergic nerve fibers – secretes noradrenaline.
  2. Chlonergic nerve fibers – secretes acetylcholine.

6. Depending upon diameter and conduction.

  1. Type A
  2. Type B
  3. Type C.
