Types Of Prognosis

Question 1. Define prognosis. Describe the types of prognosis and factors affecting prognosis in detail.
Or
Define prognosis. Write in detail about factors in determination of prognosis
Or
What is prognosis. Explain types and factors in determination of prognosis.
Or
Write short note on types of prognosis.
Answer. “Prognosis is the prediction of probable course, duration and outcome of a disease-based on general knowledge of pathogenesis of disease and presence of risk factors for the disease and the likelihood of its response to treatment”.

Prognosis must be determined after the diagnosis is made and before treatment is planned. In most cases, careful analysis of these factors allows the clinician to establish one of the following prognosis.

Types of Prognosis

  • Excellent prognosis: No bone loss, excellent gingival condition, good patient cooperation, no systemic/environmental factors.
  • Good prognosis: One or more of following suggest good prognosis, i.e. adequate remaining bone support, possibilities to control etiologic factors and establish maintainable dentition, adequate patient cooperation, no systemic/environmental factors, or if present are well controlled.
  • Fair prognosis: One or more of following suggest fair prognosis, i.e. less than adequate remaining bone support, some tooth mobility, Grade 1 furcation involvement, adequate maintenance, acceptable patient cooperation, presence of limited systemic/environmental factors.
  • Poor prognosis: One or more of the following suggest poor prognosis, i.e. moderate-to-advanced bone loss, tooth mobility, Grade 1 and 2 furcation involvement, doubtful patient cooperation, difficult to maintain areas, presence of systemic/environmental factors.
  • Questionable prognosis: One or more of the following suggest questionable prognosis, i.e. advanced bone loss, grade 2 and 3 furcation involvement, tooth mobility, inaccessible areas, systemic/environmental factors.
  • Hopeless prognosis: One or more of the following suggest hopeless prognosis, i.e. advanced bone loss, non – maintainable areas, extraction indicated, presence of uncontrolled systemic/environmental factors.

Types Of Prognosis

Question 2. Write short note on individual tooth prognosis.
Answer. lt is determined for a single tooth and it is determined after the overall prognosis.

Individual tooth prognosis is affected by overall prognosis. For example, in a patient with a poor overall prognosis, the dentist likely would not attempt it retain a tooth that has a questionable prognosis because of local conditions.
