Types Of Epiphysis

Question 1. What are different types of Epiphysis?
Answer:

  1. Pressure epiphysis
    • These epiphysis are articular
    • They take part in joint formation
    • Example: Head of humerus, lower end of radius, etc.
  2. Traction epiphysis
    • These epiphysis are non articular & so donot take part in joint formation
    • It provides attachment to tendons of muscle
    • Example: Tubercles of humerus
  3. Atavistic epiphysis
    • They are independent but they become fused
    • Example: coracoid process of scapula
  4. Aberrant epiphysis
    • They are unusual
    • Example: Epiphysis at the head of the 1st metacarpal bone & at the base of other metacarpal bone
