The intravenous provision of dextrose, amino acids, fats, trace elements, vitamins, and minerals to patients who are unable to assimilate adequate nutrition by mouth.

Patients with many illness become malnourished if they are unable to eat a balanced diet for more than few weeks, however only a small percentage of these patients benefit from parenteral nutrition support.

Patient who benefi most from total parenteral nutrition are those at extremes of nutritional defiiency.
