Risk Factors
Question 1. Write short answer on risk factors for periodontal disease.
Answer. Following are the risk factors for periodontal diseases:
Tobacco Smoking
Number of studies reported association between smoking and development of periodontal disease. These Studies suggested that smoking reduces immunity and negatively affects immunoglobulin levels thereby increasing susceptibility to periodontal disease. Moreover, studies comparing the response to periodontal therapy in smokers, former smokers and nonsmokers reported reduced response to therapy in smoker. The risk of development or periodontal disease enhances with number of cigarettes smoked per day.
Diabetes
Periodontitis is considered as the sixth complication of diabetes mellitus. The epidemiological studies have reported the increased risk of development and severity of periodontitis in diabetic patients. Chronic gram negative infections in periodontal diseases worsen glycemic control by increasing insulin tissue resistance. However, in well controlled diabetic patients, the susceptibility to periodontal infections is similar to non- diabetic patients.

Pathogenic Bacteria/ Microbial Teeth Deposits
The cross-sectional and longitudinal studies have demonstrated a casual relationship between bacterial plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation. The quality of plaque is important risk factors for periodontal disease. Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, P. gingivalis, T. forsythia, C. rectus, E. nodatum, P. intermedia, T. denticola have been isolated from diseased sites as compared to healthy sites. Anatomic factors (furcation, developmental grooves, CEP, enamel pearls) and restorative factors are known to accelerate plaque accumulation and hence increases the chances of susceptibility of periodontitis for specific teeth. However, both anatomic and restorative factors are not clearly defined as risk factors for periodontitis
