The thick skin presents the following five layers, from deep to superficial:

  • Stratum basale/stratum germinatum/basal layer
  • Stratum spinosum/spiny layer
  • Stratum granulosum/granular layer
  • Stratum lucidum/clear layer
  • Stratum corneum/cornified layer
