Answer.

Clinical Implications of Genetic Studies

“Common challenges in identifying genetic risk factors for periodontal disease”

  • Genetic studies may prove useful for identifying patients who are most likely to develop periodontal disease, suffering from recurrent disease, or suffer tooth loss as a result of periodontal disease. The utility of any screening tool, however, must be evaluated in diverse populations.
  • Genetic testing to determine risk for complex diseases (e.g. cancer) is becoming increasingly more common. With the availability of such tests, practitioners have the responsibility to inform the demanding public fully about what genetic tests can do, to act on the results, and to advise and support individuals before and after testing.
  • Knowledge of specific genetic risk factors could enable clinicians to direct environmentally based prevention and treatments to individuals who are most susceptible for periodontal disease.
  • Genetic information also may prove to be useful in predicting periodontal treatment outcomes.

Future of Genetic Studies in Periodontology

“Case studies on outcomes of genetically influenced periodontal therapies”

  • Genetic studies will provide search for risk alleles for periodontal diseases and that is how focus can be kept on candidate gene regions. Single nucleotide polymorphisms are likely to be valuable tools in this search.
  • Due to these genetic studies in near future, it should be feasible to identify all alleles that confer even a moderate risk of periodontal disease.
  • Genetic studies will explore the correct relationship between periodontal disease and genetic polymorphism which will reduce the false positive results.
