Question 1. Corpus luteum
Answer:

  • It is formed by enlargement and transformation of follicular cells after shedding of the ovum

Function:

  • Secretion of progesterone and some oestrogen

Rupture of ovarian follicle
↓
Collapse of its wall
↓
Enlargement of follicular cells
↓
Cells acquire polyhedral shape and their cytoplasm is filled with yellow pigment called lutein

Thus corpus luteum is formed

Question 2. Oogenesis.
Answer:

  • In females, maturation from primitive germ cell to mature gamete is called oogenesis.
  • It begins before birth.
  • First, oogonium enlarges to form primary oocyte.
  • The primary oocyte undergoes first meiotic division and forms secondary oocyte and first polar body.
  • All of its cytoplasm goes to the daughter cell which forms the secondary oocytes.
  • The secondary occyte undergoes second meiotic division and form ovum and second polar body.
  • All of the cytoplasm is distributed to ovum.
  • One primary oocyte forms only one ovum.
