Functions Of Ovaries: From Oogenesis To Hormone Secretion

Question 1. Ovarian hormones. (or) Corpus Iuteum. (or) Ovulation.
Answer:

Ovarian Hormones

Question 2. Functions of ovaries.
Answer:

1. Oogenesis and menstrual cycle.

  • Production of matured ova and their release into the peritoneal cavity.

2. Secretion of femal sex hormones

  • Ovaries secretes various hormones like
    1. Estrogen- enlarges uterus
    2. Progesterone – prepares endometrium for implantation
    3. Androgen-secreted only in traces.
    4. Inhibin inhibits FSH secretion.
    5. Relaxin helps in labor.

Question 3. Progesterone.
Answer:

  • It is a C21steroid.
  • It is secreted by ovaries during follicular stage of menstrual cycle.
  • It is degraded in liver and excreted in urine.

Question 4. Functions of placenta.
Answer:

1. Nutritive function.

  • Supplies nutritive substances to fetus from maternal’s blood.

2. Excretory function.

  • Excrete metabolic waste products of fetus via maternal blood.

3. Respiratory function.

  • It acts as respiratory organ for fetus.

4. Endocrine function.

  • It secretes following hormones.
    1. Human chorionic gonadotrophin (HCG)
    2. Human chorionic somatommamotrophin (HCS)
    3. Estrogen
    4. Progesterone
    5. Relaxin
