Definition:

  • Anaemia is a clinical condition characterized by reduction in the number of RBCs less than 4 million/μL or their content of haemoglobin less than 12 gm/dL or both.

Classification:

1. Etiological classification:

  1. Hemorrhagic – due to blood loss.
  2. Hemolytic – due to excessive destruction of RBCs
  3. Nutritional deficiency – due to deficiency of iron, vitamins and protein, etc.
  4. Aplastic anaemia – due to suppression of bone marrow.
  5. Anaemia of chronic diseases

2. Morphological classification:

  • It is based on the size of RBC and its haemoglobin concentration
    1. Normocytic normochromic anaemia.
      • Size of RBC – normal.
      • Haemoglobin content – normal.
      • RBC count decreases.
    2. Macrocytic normochromic anaemia.
      • Size of RBC – increases.
      • Haemoglobinc content – normal
      • RBC count – decreases.
    3. Macrocytic Hypochromic anaemia.
      • Size of RBC – increases.
      • Haemoglobin content – decreases. RBC count – less.
    4. Microcytic hypochromic anaemia.
      • Size of RBC – decreases.
      • Haemoglobin content – decreases.
