Biocompatible Materials In Restorative Dentistry

Define dental cement. Enumerate ideal requirements for dental cement.
Answer:

Dental cement: Dental cement are hard, brittle material formed by mixing powder and liquid together. They are either resin cement or acid-base cement.

Ideal Requirements of Dental Cements:

  • Dental cement should be non-toxic and non-irritant to the pulp and oral tissues.
  • Dental cement should be biocompatible.
  • Dental cement should be capable to adhere with tooth structures.
  • Dental cement should not be soluble in oral fluids.
  • Dental cement should have sufficient strength to withstand the masticatory load.
  • Dental cement should be a thermal insulator, or electrical insulator to prevent galvanic current conducting through the tooth and oral tissues.
  • Dental cement should protect the pulp from chemical insults.
  • Dental cement should have anti-cariogenic properties.
  • Dental cement should not react with the materials placed over them.
  • Dental cement should be radiopaque.
  • Dental cement should be hard enough to resist abrasion.
